P1 W1MAX Review

For most of you know, I subscribed to P1 W1MAX's trial since 13th August 2008. I posted several entries relating to P1 W1MAX:

I received a call from P1 regarding my trial subscription, as it is coming to an end. I wrote a 'straight-to-the-point' review of my experience in using P1 W1MAX.

--------------------------------------------------------------

- WiMAX SETUP

P1 W1MAX set-up is easily done. You don't have to create a new connection in order to go online using W1MAX. Instead, all you have to do is just plug the LAN cable from the modem into your computer's LAN port. That is all it takes! The modem will then automatically authenticate and within few seconds, you are hooked online.

- INTERNET BANDWIDTH SPEED

Hoho, I believe everyone will be looking for this.

Yes, the speed can be as fast as 176+kbps, but it can be as slow as 6kbps too when I downloaded the same stuff from the same site. Most of the time I get an average of 90-100kbps.

I'm not sure about downloading stuff from local sites, but it does give me frustration at times when I use W1MAX for my Hidden Street work. In my HS work, I deal with alot of downloading and uploading files to the server. The download speed was good, but the upload speed was very terrible, about 3-6kbps. I believe it was not the server's problem for the slow upload, as I tried to use Streamyx after that and it gave me a good and stable 15-20kbps of upload speed.

- W1MAX FOR ONLINE GAMING

Ah, using W1MAX for gaming seems to be smooth. I did try to use for MapleStory and DOTA. However, I don't quite recommend you to use it for online gaming. The next point explains your question: "HUH HOW COME GEH?"...

- W1MAX STABILITY

In my previous posts on W1MAX, I did mention about experiencing downtime in the first few days of using it. They called me up and explained that they were upgrading the line.

And yes, it felt more stable after that. Somehow the disconnection disease came back after a week. One night, the line seems to be really good and stable. Then the next night, the connection can be down from 10 minutes up to 3 hours anytime on a day! No joke! Until today, I can say that the average downtime is about 2 hours per day and usually it happens at night.

My area coverage for W1MAX is also unstable. On one fine day, the WiMAX signal is perfect. The next few hours, you can see the signal blinking which indicates connection problem. Not only that, the signal can be from perfect to zero.

Bringing back my previous point here, that's why it is not recommended to play online games with it. You will waste an hour of your life if you are playing DOTA.

- W1MAX SUPPORT

I love their customer support. They have a good customer support team and I am glad they know what they are actually doing. Plus, they do response to you and will get back to you if you have reported any problem to know whether the problem has been resolved.

- OVERALL

A lot of my friends asked me "So you have change to W1MAX already?".

I would really like to change from Streamyx to W1MAX and I do really support P1 W1MAX. However at this time, I would say that this isn't the time to switch yet. The stability of its connection is the main reason that is keeping me from using it.

When P1 staff called me up to give my feedback. All I said was having alot of disconnection and downtime issues even though the Internet speed was great. Then they asked whether I would like to continue subscribing to P1 W1MAX and by subscribing to it, I will be entitled for the modem for FREE, which is worth RM999. Even though the offer seems to be really good, but I declined the offer.

If I want to switch to W1MAX again in the near future, I guess I won't be able to do so anymore. Because I have to pay an upfront fee which is RM999 for the modem. Might as well I should stick to Streamyx for now.

And I think WiFi connection will never be as smooth as you want it to be :)

I'm still waiting for it to come here. :(

And yes, the upload speeds advertised is slow. But a lot of ISPs are like that. The only solution is upgrade to a higher package.

As for the online gaming, I was looking forward for something really good but it seems the stability would be an issue.

However, I heard they're in the midst of upgrading their towers even now with the influx of registrants.

Ah, I guess the coverage

Ah, I guess the coverage didn't reach your area lol.

Yeah the upload speeds are slow, but practically W1MAX upload speed is wayyyy slow. No wonder they didn't mention the upload speed in their package XD

Oh is it? I have no idea whether they are upgrading their line/towers lol.

Hope W1MAX will be available in your area soon!

Hey Kyo! Thanks for dropping by :)

Hmmmmmm, I think they did give me 1-2 weeks compensation due to the downtime I had lol. But it might be because I'm on trial. Not really sure about their compensation policy thingy.

lol yeah, that's one thing bad about Streamyx. Still they are the best around and no one will be able to compete them D:

Good that you try out P1

Good that you try out P1 WiMax. The promotion will last quite long and the modem is free during the promotion period. And when it gets popular, probably when it gets more satisfactorily stable, the modem price will certainly plummet to RM159-199. I'm a promoter for this product and this is what I've been told. However, before you switch, it's important to read the terms and conditions. The major disattraction to me is the limited 20 GB data volume transfer (download + upload), which means that your total download and upload should not exceed 20 GB. Another problem is there have been many reported downtimes of the service, probably indicates that the service is still unstable. I'm not sure when did the reported problems surface, maybe it's last year when the service just launced. And I'm not sure if the service has improved their system. Streamyx doesn't seem to have an intention to upgrade its system. Complaints from users doesn't seem to make them realise at all. What's more, they currently pay great attention to their wireless broadband service.
There're 4 WiMAX operators that acquired license for the service: P1 (the first to launch), Asiaspace, YTle and redtone (Sabah and Sarawak).
Their (first 3 operators) competition will certainly benefit us. We'll see which offers the best and we'll take them. Anyhow, we hope they'll beat Streamyx and wake it up!

Hey Jason. It's good to hear

Hey Jason. It's good to hear that you are a promoter for P1 :D

Hmmm, yeah I heard somewhere about the terms and conditions before... as in about the 20GB bandwidth limitation. This will be a hard decision for hardcore Internet users to switch over to WiMAX.

I do really hope they did improve the stability of their connection this year. If you have read my previous comment post, my friend living in USJ is having difficulty in this WiMAX connection, and he just subscribed for the trial recently.

Heh yeah, hope all these guys will be a big competitor towards Streamyx. Rawr!
